New image for Dorset Wildlife Trust

 11th Jun 2009

DWTcolour small"We love wildlife!"  That was the cry of children who helped Dorset Wildlife Trust to launch its new logo at the weekend.  The new design, featuring Dorset downland, the sea and one of Dorset's iconic rare flowers, the early spider orchid, was launched at the Dorchester People and Wildlife Day in the town centre's Borough Gardens.  Hundreds of people visited the event and enjoyed seeing live wildlife and joining in the many activities, including making badges featuring the new wildlife symbol.

Simon Cripps, Chief Executive, said: "The Dorset downs, the sea and wildlife such as the early spider orchid, all on our new logo, say it all really - we are making sure that the nature of Dorset continues for the future, for these children and their children after them."

Dorset has more than half of the UK's population of early spider orchids.  They bloom in May on the Purbeck coast near Dancing Ledge, Durlston Country Park and Townsend Nature Reserve in Swanage and a survey undertaken this year indicates that they, like many other flowers this year, are doing well, with a huge increase in numbers since the last survey in 1996.  Dorset Wildlife Trust is also reporting a doubling in numbers of green-winged orchids at its Corfe Mullen Meadow reserve, so it looks as if this really is a good year for Dorset's blooming wildlife.
