A new bird hide has been destroyed and a second one seriously damaged at the new Chard Junction Community Nature Reserve. The arson attack took place last weekend, targeting the brand new hides, which were only put in two weeks ago. Residents have been working hard with Dorset Wildlife Trust to turn the disused quarry into a community nature reserve for the benefit of local people and wildlife, with the blessing of site owners Bardon Aggregates.
Joy Wallis, People and Wildlife Co-ordinator for Dorset Wildlife Trust, said: "Everybody is horrified. We have just created a fantastic local amenity for the public to enjoy and, as soon as it is open, it is attacked in this shocking way. It is really sad that someone should destroy what is meant to be for the benefit of local people."
Chard Junction Nature Reserve is in the far west of the Dorset, close to the Somerset and Devon borders and providing a much needed haven for wildlife as there are no other nature reserves nearby. It is due to be officially launched at an Open Day on 17th June.
Police are currently investigating the attack. Joy adds: "If anybody can help in any way with the investigation, please get in touch with the police. We are hoping to replace the hide as soon as possible. Bardon Aggregates have already pledged £1000 towards the cost, but we need to find another £4000, so any donations towards this would be welcomed."
If you know anything about the arson attack, please ring Chard police on 0845 456 7000. If you would like to help with the cost of a new hide, please ring Bardon Aggregates on 01530 816684.
