Discover The Wild SideWild About Weymouth and Portland is a partnership project, funded by the Big Lottery Fund through Natural England's Access to Nature programme, involving Dorset Wildlife Trust, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, Dorset Countryside Ranger Service (DCC) and Weymouth and Portland Borough Council. It aims to improve access in and between important wildlife sites in the borough and encourage local people and visitors to discover, enjoy and help conserve the wonderful natural environment of Weymouth and Portland. Access for all
Access improvements will begin on site with the removal of physical barriers preventing local people from enjoying their local wildlife sites. We are making improvements to footpaths, widening gateways and replacing stiles with gates, adding wheelchair friendly pathways at some of our sites and improving the signage and information available. We will also be tackling some of the perceived barriers that may be preventing people from accessing these sites. These include assumptions that sites may be only for members of our organisations, or that a site is simply not for you. We want everybody to enjoy the wonderful natural heritage that Weymouth and Portland has to offer! Walk This WayA key part of our access improvements is a new trail we are currently developing to link paths all the way from Littlemoor to Portland Bill. This trail will be marked with artistic waypoints designed to inspire and inform, as well as to represent the local landscape and heritage. Watch this space for the trail map coming soon! Get InvolvedWe will be running a programme of events and activities to suit everyone over the coming months. Check the website for monthly events lists. There will be plenty of family activities with a chance to learn about wildlife and take part in craft activities and games. We will also be running bushcraft sessions allowing young people to get out and get to grips with nature and survival. We also have a lot of volunteering opportunities, so if you fancy putting something back into your local wild spaces then get in touch, or come along to one of our regular sessions advertised on the events list. |
