Portuguese Man O'War 'jellyfish' return

 30th Aug 2009
Portuguese Man O'War - Steve TrewhellaThe beautiful Portuguese Man O'War have once again adorned our south coast shores throughout the month of August.  These beautiful colonies representing one jellyfish-like animal are siphonophores and have been appearing sporadically within the Purbeck Marine Wildlife Reserve.  Further west past Portland, they have been appearing in much higher numbers and beach users have been warned about the powerful sting these animals emit upon touch, even when dead.  Please remember to look and don't touch and where possible report these sightings to Dorset Wildlife Trust or Portland coastguard.
