 Nature reserve wardens were shocked to find that a buzzard had been shot on Upton Heath on Tuesday 2nd February. After the stricken bird of prey was reported to Dorset Wildlife Trust staff by a member of the public, wardens Sam Hamer and Nigel Brooks found it close to the A35 on Upton Heath.
Shot by air rifle
It was taken to be examined by Nick Ridge, of Dorset Wildlife Rescue in Creekmoor, who said: “There is not much doubt that it was shot by an air gun and I am fairly sure it was an air rifle.”
The unfortunate bird could not be saved as its main wing joint was shattered. Apart from distress at the death of the bird, Nick expressed concern about the implications of the incident, adding: “Nobody should be firing an air rifle on Upton Heath, especially so close to the main road”.
Breaking the law
Nigel Brooks, Dorset Wildlife Trust Warden, said: “Whoever did this was breaking the law -buzzards are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and also putting the public in danger. Fortunately this is a very unusual incident and we would appeal to the public to help us and the police to stop it happening again.”
