Step into spring at Lorton Meadows

 8th Feb 2010

Coffin plantation Lorton Meadows (photo by Dorset Wildlife Trust)Dorset Wildlife Trust is inviting people to step into spring at Lorton Meadows nature reserve, with its next popular Open Day on Saturday 20th February.

In Weymouth’s Lorton Valley, spring is just around the corner, according to Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Sam Dallimore: “Lorton Meadows is starting to fill with the sound of birdsong and we already have birds checking out the nest sites, several of which are fitted with cameras. The kestrels are back and we are all hoping that this time the lonely barn owl will find a mate come and see for yourself on the screens in the Visitor Centre.”

Fresh air, exercise and wildlife

If you prefer to do something practical for the wildlife of this beautiful nature reserve, there are also fortnightly Wednesday Winter Work Parties until March. Sam said: “Now is the time to complete our preparations for spring, with jobs like path maintenance and scrub clearance. If you would like a dose of healthy fresh air and exercise while helping wildlife, we would love to see you!”

Come and see for yourself!

The Lorton Meadows Open Day is on Saturday 20th February from 10am to 4pm. Visitors can walk around the woods and meadows of the reserve, with its panoramic views of the Jurassic Coast, and watch live bird activity on a screen in the Centre. Hot drinks, gifts and wildlife books are also available in the Visitor Centre.

The Wednesday Winter Work Parties are fortnightly from 10th February until 24th March from 10am to 2pm.

Lorton Meadows nature reserve is on Lorton Lane, Upwey, Weymouth, DT3 5QH. All these events are free. For more information, please ring Sam at Lorton Meadows on 01305 816546.
