A partnership between Bournemouth University and Dorset Wildlife Trust has given a massive boost to youth volunteering. More than 60 young people aged between 16 and 25 came to a Youth Volunteering Taster Day on Brownsea Island, with over 90% pledging to do more conservation volunteering with Dorset Wildlife Trust.
Young volunteers from across the conurbation
The day was organised by BA Events Management students from Bournemouth University, with support from V, the national volunteering organisation. The volunteers came from across the conurbation and as far afield as Winchester to help manage the island’s woods for the benefit of red squirrels. They removed invasive rhododendron in the Dorset Wildlife Trust nature reserve on the National Trust owned island and discovered the special wildlife and habitats of the internationally important reserve.
A huge success!
Amanda Cooke, People and Wildlife Officer at Dorset Wildlife Trust, said: ”From the point of view of conservation, the day was a huge success, clearing rhododendron from a difficult, steep slope, but we are also very pleased with the feedback we have had from the volunteers, ranging from ‘amazing’ to ‘awesome’ to ‘eye-opening’. Most importantly, they want to come back for more!”
Dr Dorothy Fox, Lecturer in Events Management at Bournemouth University said: “We're extremely pleased that our students worked in partnership with Dorset Wildlife Trust on this event. Not only have the students gained valuable experience in organising outdoor events but also their months of hard work will create a lasting legacy on Brownsea Island.”
Young volunteers with Dorset Wildlife Trust
Dorset’s biggest conservation organisation is in the second year of a 3 year project to advance volunteering for young people aged 16 to 25 with funding from V, the national youth volunteering organisation, and has recently been recognised as a national beacon of excellence.
Amanda added: “this is just one example of the work we are doing with young people across the county, giving them the chance to help their local environment while boosting their CV and their confidence.”
