Dorset Wildlife Trust’s annual musical extravaganza ‘Life in the Wild’ comes to historic Athelhampton House this October. The popular autumn event, now in its 3rd year, brings together some of Britain’s finest musical and literary talent for a unique evening of music, poetry and good food. With the nights drawing in, it’s a chance both to celebrate the natural world and to raises vital funds to protect it.
Created by poet and film maker Paddy Hughes especially for Dorset Wildlife Trust, ‘Life in the Wild’ mixes words and music with more than a hint of humour, haunting melody and foot-tapping rhythm, a winning combination that brings audiences back year after year.
What entertainment is there?
Poetry, from the sublime to the surreal, comes from award-winning poet and performer Nigel Lawrence and from Paddy Hughes, while Dorset-based actress Jan Wyld makes her début with the ensemble and Jacki Piper (from Carry On films and TV) brings a new humorous selection of readings. Musicians appearing in ‘Life in the Wild’ for the first time are well-known Dorset trumpeter Winston Lees, American jazz clarinettist Russel Shipley, and, from North Dorset, pianist and musical director Caroline D'Cruz and baritone singer Andrew Armstrong. Returning by popular demand are folk combo y’Strel’s Band, featuring John Bullock and Helen Coombs, Wendy Partridge with her haunting classical guitar, William Morton with his irrepressible flute and piccolo, soprano Anne-Marie Williams and the versatile blues, jazz and folk singer Linda Readman.
Christine Quilter, Fundraising Officer at Dorset Wildlife Trust, said: “We have the most beautiful venue this year, with its 15th century Hall and beautiful formal gardens combined with a stunning line-up of performers, who are generously supporting our work for Dorset’s wildlife. We can promise you an unforgettable night out with lots of laughs and delectable food and music. You’ll wish the evening would never end!”
