Internationally known artist Adam Chodzko is giving a free talk at Powerstock Hut on Sunday 12 February, 5pm to 7pm, about the new work he is making in response to Powerstock Common. Everyone is welcome there is no need to book and refreshments will be available.
art explores the interactions and possibilities of human behaviour
The talk is part of Road for the Future, a year long collaborative project, based at Powerstock Common, which looks at our ideas about the countryside, transport and access, and contributes to the debate about its future sustainability. The project is working closely with the Dorset Wildlife Trust and with the proposed multi-use Trailway being developed by Sustrans between Maiden Newton and Bridport. .
Adam Chodzko’s art explores the interactions and possibilities of human behaviour. For this new work, he is interested in the ‘specificity’ of Powerstock Common. ‘It is precisely nowhere else in the world. It is just here. Now. But it exists in its ‘now’ form through a long history of growth and decay. And so I wonder about how those transformations might extend into the future.’ Imagining the Common’s future, he is creating an online collection of videos showing hiding places on this land, making available these very particular sites to anyone, globally, as though the Common is floating as an island above the earth. Pushing the reality of Powerstock Common into science-fiction in a second work, Chodzko envisages the visuals for a private bank’s misguided attempts to build a financial institution on this Common Land.
How can I get involved?
Road for the Future is funded by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, West Dorset District Council, Ernest Cook Trust, Artsway Associates and The Dorset Design and Heritage Forum. Project partners are Dorset Wildlife Trust, Sustrans, the Architectural Association at Hooke Park, PVA MediaLab, Bridport Arts Centre and Treewise Co-op.
