Dorset Wildlife Trust has been awarded a share of a £14.5 million grant by Natural England as part of the government commitment to reduce species at risk of extinction in the UK.
The Keeled skimmer is a dragonfly of heaths and commons with shallow pools. It has a skittish and weak flight, and is on the wing in summer and early autumn.
The Black-tailed skimmer is a narrow-bodied dragonfly that can be seen flying low over the bare gravel and mud around flooded gravel pits and reservoirs. It is on the wing from May to August.

After years of declining butterfly populations, a recent survey by the Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT) has found a record number of a rare butterfly species on the Upton Heath nature reserve.
