Marine Volunteering

Volunteer Marine Wardens are an essential asset to the running of the Purbeck Marine Wildlife Reserve - a group of trained individuals who work along side Dorset Wildlife Trust staff. They receive training in topics such as species identification, marine conservation issues and protection, wardening, cetaceans and fishing.

What do Volunteers do?

Volunteers help with a range of tasks, including:

  • Manning the marine centre
  • Patrolling the reserve
  • Monitoring research projects and carrying out surveys
  • Helping to deliver our education programme
  • Assisting on guided walks and events
  • Helping on work parties, such as beach cleans and reserve maintenance

How to become a Volunteer

Volunteering at Purbeck Marine Wildlife Reserve can be a rewarding experience. If you would like to apply to join the team as an active volunteer, please call in at the Fine Foundation Marine Centre or contact the wardens on 01929 481044.

Free Newsletter

Volunteers receive a free regular newsletter Kimmeridge Tidings, and the opportunity to get involved with other Dorset Wildlife Trust activities.

Surf n Turf; Purbeck Conservation Volunteers

Dorset Wildlife Trust have now created a new Purbeck volunteer group for 2009, appropriately named Surf n' Turf, to encompass land and shore based practical conservation.  Volunteers aged 13 and up may register and sign up for any one of the open sessions available throughout the year. Click here to find out more.

Volunteer divers and kayakers

Divers and kayak users often have a keen interest in marine biology, love of the Dorset coast or are determined to become more involved with marine conservation.  Many underestimate the importance of reporting sightings and ultimately, the marine inhabitants don't receive the all-important awareness raising and therefore protection they deserve.

By becoming a member to the Dorset Wildlife Trust's free affiliation groups, users will be offered a range of benefits and opportunities including:

  • Membership to the Dorset Wildlife Trust online forum; an opportunity to discuss sightings, view and upload images and obtain verification on unknown sightings.
  • Marine life identification guide and reporting forms for download.
  • A free presentation on Underwater Dorset; Living Seas at the Fine Foundation Marine Centre.
  • Information on local clubs, shops and reference materials.
  • Discount on Dorset Wildlife Trust annual membership.
