Removing barriers to access is critical in developing new audiences and promoting access to the natural heritage, for example improving gates, paths, signs and information on some of our nature reserves as well as making the access opportunities more widely known about through working with partners and publishing leaflets and online information.

It is imperative that we take a proactive approach to engaging new audiences for the natural heritage, for example we will devise a programme of activities to enable young people, provide a range of work placement opportunities and work with new partners to deliver a targeted range of opportunities for people with physical and learning disabilities to explore the natural heritage.

Discover Brownsea!

Brownsea Island Nature Reserve affords unique opportunities to experience wildlife and the natural heritage all year round.  Access to the island is, however, restricted by its location and the need to travel by boat.  Pubic boats charge a fee and there is also a landing fee for the public who are not National Trust or DWT members.  We aim to provide free transport and to waive the landing fee for participants in organised DWT activities for target groups.  In order to achieve this objective we will work with new partners to deliver a programme of activities that will take place at our Brownsea Island Nature Reserve and develop a series of volunteering opportunities to enable people from excluded groups to play an active role in conserving Brownsea's unique natural heritage.

Community Matters!

We must ensure that the natural heritage and its contribution to everyone's quality of life receives a high profile in the local community, for example we will be represented at Community Partnerships and respond to planning applications which will impact on nature reserves and greenspaces.  We will also organise regular community events to promote the value local wildlife in the urban areas and work with other sectors (such as health or social services) for the benefit of local communities and the natural environment.
