Young People Take Action in Purbeck
Young people are taking action for Purbeck's wildlife on land and sea. In response to demands for more opportunities to help and protect this special area, Dorset Wildlife Trust has launched Surf n Turf, bringing together land and marine conservation volunteering for young people in Purbeck.
Dorset Wildlife Trust hopes to recruit many more young people to join the already established group of Purbeck volunteers to promote its conservation message and work alongside the wardens on land and on the shore. Surf n Turf is supported by V, the National Youth Volunteering Programme and the Purbeck Community Partnership.
Conservation work that young people are already involved in includes:
- Adopting Worbarrow Bay as a venue for regular beach cleans
- Restoring important ponds near Langton Matravers
- Surveying the Purbeck Marine Wildlife Reserve shoreline and beneath the waves
- Promoting the seashore code to visitors at Kimmeridge
- Assisting with the running of Dorset Wildlife Trust's Fine Foundation Marine Centre at Kimmeridge
- Clearing scrub at Stonehill Down
- Installing new signs at our Purbeck reserves
- Carrying out woodland surveys at Kilwood
- Taking part in identification workshops on heathland, downland and woodlands.
Surf n Turf is open to people aged 13 to 25 for marine sessions and anyone over 16 for land based sessions. Young people can mix and match the sessions, trying anything and everything on the programme and there are opportunities to work towards several accreditation schemes, including the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
