September is the time to get walking, with perfect conditions for enjoying Dorset’s spectacular countryside. Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Walk for Wildlife on September 19th has a route for everyone and even a special sponsor form for dogs who want to do their bit for wildlife. With 3 different length routes, taking in some of the best scenery in Britain (as seen on this year’s Springwatch) and including part of the World Heritage Jurassic Coast, this year’s sponsored event is a great day out for all ages.

Dogs and people invited to enjoy the Purbeck countryside

Fiona Sansom, Supporter Development Manager at Dorset Wildlife Trust, said: “Pull on a pair of walking boots and help us to make 2010 the best Walk for Wildlife ever! This year we've organised three routes to suit all levels and ages of walker. They all start and finish at the MGFT Animal Sanctuary  at Church Knowle, and each one includes stunning views of the Purbeck coastline and countryside.”

This is the first year that dogs have been especially invited to join the walk. Fiona said: “We know that dogs and their owners love the Dorset countryside and we are sure that they will want to help us to protect it and its special wildlife. Dogs and people are all encouraged to raise as much sponsorship as possible, all of which will go straight to our vital work for this beautiful and diverse county.”

Which route will you choose?

5.8 mile - a walk up to Swyre Head then along the ridge to the top of Kimmeridge village, before heading inland to Stonehill Down  with its stunning views over Poole Harbour then dropping back down into Church Knowle. Wildlife to look out for: stonechat, yellowhammer.

10 mile - as for the 5.8 mile route, but dropping down to Rope Lake Head from Swyre Head, then following the beautiful coast path to Kimmeridge. It’s then uphill to join up again with the 5.8 mile route towards Stonehill Down and onwards. Wildlife to look out for: peregrine falcon, brown hare.

24 mile - heading east to Corfe Common and then taking the Purbeck Way to the first checkpoint at Worth Matravers. From there it’s a steady walk along the Priests Way to Spyway Barn then dropping down to join the coast path, linking up with the 10 mile route at Rope Lake Head. Wildlife to look out for: dolphins, wheatear.
