The woodland on the south side of the road (South Clarkham Copse) is accessed via a gate through the meadow, leading to a path which loops around the wood. The northern part of the wood (Harper's Hill Copse) is also accessed through a gate but has no formal paths. Uneven gently sloping ground, which can be very wet in winter months. Be mindful of the small risk of falling branches if visiting after strong winds.

About the reserve

Hibbitt Woods is tucked away in a peaceful part of west Dorset, the perfect place to relax and get ‘back to nature.’ The reserve combines two attractive areas of ancient woodland together with a small flower-rich meadow, next to the small hamlet of Adam’s Green. Nature lovers will love walking through the nature reserve, which has a huge wildlife interest including birds, bats, butterflies and wildflowers.

July heralds the arrival of the silver-washed fritillaries; these beautiful orange butterflies can be seen swooping around the edges of the wood and the paths. Their numbers dropped sharply across the 20th century but have been making a comeback in recent years. Other butterflies include meadow brown, marbled white and ringlet in the meadow.

Keep your eyes peeled for the many varieties of breeding birds including bullfinch, spotted flycatcher, and song thrush. Take a stroll in the evening as the light fades and you might see one of our natterer's bats emerging from their maternity roost!

Flower interest in the woods includes early purple and bird's-nest orchids, the Goldilocks buttercup, wild daffodil and bluebell (a special spring treat), while out on the meadow, common spotted orchid, cowslips and the rare adder's tongue fern.

Useful Information

The nature reserve is located near Adam’s Green which is 11 kilometres south of Yeovil. From Yeovil take the A37 south; turn right to Halstock passing to the west of Sutton Bingham Reservoir. At Halstock, turn left to Adam’s Green.
