Make a home for wildlife

Welcome to the Wildlife Friendly Gardening Competition kindly sponsored by the Gardens Group.

This year we want everyone to take Action for Insects and help pollinators great and small! Last year we wanted to #GetDorsetBuzzing and now our mission is to #KeepDorsetBuzzing!

If you'd like to apply for a Wildlife Friendly Garden plaque WITHOUT entering the competition, please go to the plaque scheme pages here. To find out more, simply click the arrows below, then fill in the form. Good luck and we can't wait to see your gardens!

The 2020 competition closes on May 15th this year, so please hurry! Don't miss out!

Who can enter?

The following categories are available: Small, medium or large gardens and community gardens (which includes schools, community groups and housing associations). So, whether you have a gigantic garden or a little plot, we want to see how you are welcoming wildlife and nature into your backyard!  Don't forget you will need at least 6 of the wildlife friendly features listed here to qualify

Can I enter again if I have won in the past?

In order for other gardens to have a chance of winning, if you have won (1st place) in the competition before we ask that you do not enter the following, consecutive year. For example if you won in 2017 then please wait until 2019 to enter again.

If you have won 2nd, 3rd or highly commended in previous years then you are welcome to enter in consecutive years. Thanks for your understanding!

What happens after I have sent my application online?

Once you have submitted your online application form, we will sort them into geographical areas and pass this onto the judges.

The judges will then contact you to arrange a visit, which will be during the working week. It is preferable for you to be present during the visit however, if you are unable to be there in person then we may have to access the garden, with your permission, without you present.

Please note that you will only be contacted by the judge to arrange a visit once the competition closes. Therefore, depending on when you entered the competition this may be up to two months after you sent in your application. Please bear with us at this time as we have to administer a high volume of applications!

However, if you are concerned that your application may not have been received please email wildlifegardeningcomp@dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk or ring 01202 692 033.

How is the competition judged?

The judges will visit your garden and use a score sheet to mark your garden. The competition is scored on a points based system - the higher the score the better. We want to see how you are making your garden a haven for wildlife, we have lots of ideas on our In Your Garden page here.

What if I don’t own my garden?

Don’t be put off if you live in a rented property of any sort or don’t own the garden you have made wildlife friendly. We will take into account that you may not be able to make big structural changes.

What can I win?

Winners prizes will include a fabulous selection of wildlife friendly gardening products and a special Winner’s plaque. To say thank you for all your hard work, ALL entries will receive a certificate and a DWT wildlife friendly garden plaque.

There will be an Awards Ceremony for everyone who enters the competition. You will receive an invitation nearer to the date.

Who can come to the awards ceremony?

Everyone who enters the competition is invited along to the awards ceremony. One free ticket is given to the entrant and then any additional tickets cost £5 per person, which will need to be paid for in advance by ringing 01305 264 620. If you are in the community category then 5 free tickets are allocated to you and any additional ones are £5 each.
