Willow Wigwam Garden Supports (Kingcombe Centre Course)
Friday 20 April 2018 10:00 - 16:00
Create your own beautiful willow garden supports ready for the growing season.
Richard and Suzanne Kerwood of Windrush Willow will guide you through making a 4 to 6ft tall wigwam plant support with 12 uprights, followed by a cylindrical grow-through plant support using similar and additional techniques. Whilst you work, you will hear about the history of this ancient tradition and learn about how willow is grown and harvested. You will discover the range of colours and designs together with learning the wonderful language of willow work including randing, butts, tips, slypes, mellowing, to name but a few terms.
No previous experience is required. This is a perfect course for those starting out with willow work or for those with some experience wishing to learn a new technique.
Suzanne and Richard Kerwood have been growing and weaving living willow in the UK since 1997 - a big contrast from their previous occupations (a bank officer and flying instructor respectively). Over the last 6 years they have specialised in bespoke projects including creating restaurant interiors, various garden features and fencing. Based on the outskirts of Exeter, Windrush grows 150 varieties of living willow. The hand-planting, harvesting, drying and weaving gives them a real sense of pride in their work and efforts to achieve an environmentally balanced lifestyle.
Why not make a long weekend of it to really expand your willow repertoire and stay for Saturday’s Fun Willow Garden Decorations and Sunday’s Willow Frame Baskets in a Day workshops? Just call us to arrange B&B.
