Dorset County Council provides most local services in this picturesque county on the south coast of England, which has many historic towns, as well as extensive Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It works in many different ways with the aim of improving the quality of life for people in Dorset now and in the future, by providing education, social services, transport, trading standards and libraries.

Dorset County Council's Countryside access and heritage division deals with country side management, rights of way, conservation specialists such as ecology and archeology, landscape and historic building and a coastal policy unit. Specialist records, advice and practical help are all available.
