Saving Water for Wildlife

Healthy rivers and wetlands are essential for wildlife and people.  They support thousands of species from amphibians and birds to mammals, invertebrates and rare plants. Not only are they among the biodiverse habitats in the UK, but they also provide vital benefits to the environment and people. They contribute to tackling climate change by storing carbon and protect towns and villages from flooding by holding water and slowing its flow. Wetlands and rivers also act as natural filters improving the quality of water before it reaches places like Poole Harbour.

Over 90% of the UK's wetlands have disappeared in the last century.

Dorset's precious rivers and wetlands face threats from pollution, development, and climate change—with less than 15% of Dorset's rivers currently in favourable condition. Dorset Wildlife Trust is working to protect and restore these vital habitats, both at our nature reserves and across the wider landscape in partnership with landowners and conservation organisations.

You can help make more space for water too. Support our Water for Wildlife campaign, protect Dorset’s waterways by using less water at home and in your garden, or sign up for your FREE water-saving checklist to learn how you can help to provide more water for wildlife.
