With Easter weekend just around the corner, what could be better than a hunt for marine eggs along the seashore? Dorset Wildlife Trust is organising an exciting hunt for the eggs of sea creatures, at its Purbeck Marine Wildlife Reserve on Friday 2nd April. Although you won’t be able to eat your finds, there will be chocolate egg rewards instead!
Easter fun for children and adults
It will be followed on Easter Saturday by The Great Kimmeridge Egg Case Hunt, searching for empty egg cases and discovering clues as to what mermaids keep in their purses. On both days the hunts will be guided by experts from the marine reserve.
Emma Rance, Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Marine Officer, says: “These days of hunts for the eggs and discarded egg cases of sea creatures are always great fun and attract both children and adults alike, to learn more about our underwater life. The finds also help us to monitor Dorset’s marine wildlife, which is vital in protecting one of Europe’s most important natural habitats.”
Sea air and exploration
The Fine Foundation Marine Centre, with its colourful displays, interactive exhibits and aquaria, will be also be open for visitors to discover more about the wonders of the undersea world. Kimmeridge Bay is particularly suitable for marine wildlife exploration, with its shallow and clear waters and extended low tide periods. These Easter weekend events offer a great opportunity for families to get out and about and to enjoy a search in the sea air.
The Marine Egg Hunt is on Friday 2nd April and The Great Kimmeridge Egg Case Hunt is on Saturday 3rd April at Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Fine Foundation Marine Centre at Kimmeridge Bay. These action-packed days start at 2pm and go on till 3.30pm each day and are especially suitable for children, who must be accompanied. The cost is £2 per person.
The Marine Centre will be open during the Easter holidays (2nd to 18th April) Tuesdays to Sundays plus Easter Monday 10.30- 5pm. For more information please contact Dorset Wildlife Trust on 01929 481044.
