Cogdean Elms Local Nature Reserve (LNR)

PDF Map

This is a tiny nature reserve managed by East Dorset District Council. It is made up of two small meadows of semi-improved acid grassland, edged by mature deciduous trees. There is also a small pond (which is very low and muddy this year due to the lack of water this Spring). Should be an interesting area for insects, birds and flora. Orchids have been found on this site (this year).

Size: 0.5Ha (1.2 acres) Grid reference: SY 993 978

Hugh Miles' Garden

Included on Cogdean map above

Hugh's garden is made up of different sized ponds, interspersed by grass, flowerbeds, wildflower areas and shrubs. The whole garden is edged by mature trees (deciduous). Should be a great area for flora, moths, birds, pond life, bugs and bats!

Size: Approx 0.81Ha (2 acres) Grid reference:SY 993 981

Corfe Mullen Recreation Ground

Included on Cogdean map above

This is a busy recreation area with tennis courts, cricket/football pitches and skateboarding. However, head towards the views of Badbury Rings (to your left) and you will find two small fields, surrounded by hedges and deciduous mature trees. One field is mown, the other has mown paths but the rest of the grass is left to grow throughout the summer. Within the larger of these fields there is also an area that has been planted with wildflower seed by the Corfe Mullen Parish Council. Should be an interesting place for birds, insects and flora.

Size: 17.8Ha (44 acres) Grid reference: (Parking) SY 987 979

Upton Heath Nature Reserve

The boggy areas support many dragonfly species as well as carnivorous round-leaved sundew & raft spiders.
