Brooklands Farm Conservation Centre

Site of DWT's headquarters in the River Cerne valley, a few miles N. of Dorchester.  Chalk grassland, enclosed by a carefully planted hedgerow, has been developed as a hay meadow to reverse the impact of fertilisers, now colonised by typical Dorset downland flowers.  A shallow pond was excavated in 1996 &, apart from the introduction of a few plants, allowed to develop naturally.

Wildlife interest:

  • The hay meadow was started by spreading a cut from a local reserve & cowslip, yellow rattle & kidney vetch now thrive, with thyme on the shallow soil 'lynchets'.
  • In summer the pond is full of water beetles, dragonflies & damselflies with butterflies over the field.

Best time to visit:

Spring & summer.  Any time of the year can produce an unexpected bird species, particularly at migration.  Visitor Centre open during normal working hours.

Access:

Easy access to most of the grounds & the building.  Disabled toilet at the Centre.

Location:

Map ref. SY 666952.  On the western side of the A352 Dorchester to Cerne Abbas road, about 2 miles North of Charminster.
