Glittering evening for Wildlife Trust celebrations

 7th Dec 2011

Sir David Attenborough and Dorset-born conductor Sir John Eliot Gardiner led the celebrations of Dorset Wildlife Trust’s 50th Anniversary at a glittering concert of English music with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. The Golden Jubilee Gala Concert at Lighthouse Poole, featured a programme of English music, specially selected by Sir John Eliot Gardiner, including Elgar’s Enigma Variations, Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending and Shepherd’s Fennel Dance by Henry Balfour Gardiner, great uncle of Sir John Eliot.

A fantastic evening had by all

Fiona Sansom, Supporter Development Manager at Dorset Wildlife Trust said “We were delighted that the concert was sold out in advance but we could not have ever anticipated the fantastic music, repartee and atmosphere provided by Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Sir David Attenborough and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. The audience where wowed throughout, and spellbound by the performances of the two soloists Alina Ibragimova and Ruth Gibson. The concert ended with a rapturous standing ovation and it was a privilege to be a part of this event, which was not just a fitting finale to the 50th Anniversary year of the Trust but also one that so many will remember for the rest of their lives. The term gentleman is not often coined in these modern times but it is the only word for Sir John Eliot Gardiner and Sir David Attenborough who gave of their time freely and with great generosity to support Dorset Wildlife Trust; we cannot thank them both enough.”

Continuing our work for the future

Formed in 1961 as the Dorset Naturalists’ Trust, the conservation charity has saved some of the county’s most precious sites and grown to be a major voice for nature with local authorities, communities, businesses, government and partners as well as working with a national network of 47 Wildlife Trusts.  Fund raising continues throughout 2011 for the Dorset Wildlife Fund to provide emergency and long term financial support for land purchase, development of educational facilities, nature reserve management and for nature-restoration projects for the protection of Dorset’s natural heritage into the next 50 years.  For more information, visit the website or ring 01305 264620.
