There is a feast for the senses this August at Verwood’s sensory garden. To celebrate its first year, all are invited to enjoy this unique garden at the Green Fair on Saturday 14th August. The Hub Sensory Garden is a wheelchair accessible sensory and wildlife garden created by Dorset Wildlife Trust and the people of Verwood, including local schoolchildren and adults from Verwood Opportunity Centre.
Designed by Shelley Morris, the garden is a spiral with sensory compartments, willow sculptures and a wild flower meadow. Water features and trellises complete the structure, with hedgehog and bat boxes made by the Verwood Opportunity Centre. Dorset Wildlife Trust and the community hope to raise enough money to add a pergola for insect-friendly climbers and install nestcams for bird and hedgehog boxes.
Inspirational wildlife gardening by local people
The Green Fair will also be a chance to learn about wildlife gardening and about the natural world of Verwood and its nature reserves, including how to get involved with Dorset Wildlife Trust’s new reserve, Bugdens Meadow. The event is one of DWT’s summer season of Wildlife Wonder gardens, showing some of the best of wildlife gardening and encouraging people to make room for wildlife in their own gardens.
Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Noel Bergin said: “This is a stunning garden for all the senses, and this is the perfect time to experience it at its best. It is a garden for everybody local people of all ages have helped to set it up and look after it and the wildlife loves it too. The unusual design is a real inspiration for anyone wanting to make their own wildlife garden.”
The Verwood Garden Green Fair is on Saturday 14th August from 10am to 3pm at The Hub Sensory Garden, Brock Way, Verwood BH31 6WW. Free event. For more details, ring Dorset Wildlife Trust on 01202 692033.
