Haydon Hill Reserve

Size: 10ha.

A stroll from DWT's HQ at Brooklands Farm, this reserve is on a steep north-facing slope of unimproved chalk grassland in the River Cerne valley.  It supports a diverse range of flowers, birds & butterflies.

Wildlife interest:

  • Yellowhammer & linnet in hedgerows & field margins.
  • Barn owl, kestrel & buzzards prey on the numerous voles & shrews.
  • Red clover, autumn gentian squinancywort & harebell grow on the easterly field.
  • Common blue, green hairstreak, marbled white & orange tip among the butterflies found.

Best time to visit:

Summer for the flowers & butterflies.

Access:

Steeply sloping ground on most of the reserve.

Location:

Map ref. SY 671945.  Two miles N. of Charminster on the W. side of the A352 Dorchester to Cerne Abbas road. Look for a small pull-off car parking area at the foot of the hill.
