Loscombe Reserve

Size: 10ha.

This small reserve consists of fields intersected by ancient hedgerows, sloping steeply down to a small stream and marshy ground. Mostly unimproved grassland.  Old sunken lane at the top of the reserve.

Wildlife interest:

  • Small colony of snake's head fritillaries amongst other grassland species.
  • Wetter areas support a wide variety of plants including southern marsh orchids.
  • To the east of the reserve, numerous yellow meadow ant hills cover the steep slopes.

Best time to visit:

  • Spring & summer for wildflowers & butterflies.
  • Winter for siskins, redpolls, fieldfares & redwings.

Access:

Not easy due to the boggy ground adjacent to the stream & the steepness of the fields.

Location:

Map ref.
