Dormouse Facts: The Dormouse is one of England's rarest mammals and has already dissapeared from seven counties due to habitat loss.

It only grows to about 8cm long and usually feeds at night on flowers, nuts and fruit (especially hazel and honeysuckle). It is very, very shy and hardly ever seen.

Conservation: At Dorset Wildlife Trust we have set up a Dorset Dormouse Recovery Project which has built and placed hundreds of nest boxes for dormice just like Dave at eleven of our nature reserves around Dorset.

Licensed experts check these boxes every month throughout the summer for signs of dormice, allowing us to keep a close eye on the dormouse population levels.

These boxes are very popular with dormice and provide them with a secure home for nesting and hibernation. Your adoption money will enable us to increase the amount of boxes and carry on our important survey work.

About the Squirrels: All of the red squirrels live in the woods that are part of a beautiful nature reserve on Brownsea Island within Poole Harbour, Dorset.

Although shy they can be seen quite easily during the day jumping from tree to tree and searching for food on the woodland floor. It is estimated that only 200 red squirrels are left on Brownsea Island.

Red Squirrel Facts: Nationally the red squirrel population is in decline. They are mainly found in Northern England and Scotland, with a few isolated populations in the south (Brownsea Island!). A red squirrel will grows to about 20 to 28cm long.

Conservation: As they are so rare we are trying to provide more habitats for them and other wildlife to flourish in.

With your help we will be able to protect wildlife for the future by managing habitats, increasing public awareness, fighting inappropriate development and influencing decision-makers right up to government level.
