Wildlife podcasts in your home this autumn

You can now visit some of Dorset’s top wildlife reserves without even leaving your sofa. Perfect for a rainy day or if you are not feeling quite up to facing the great outdoors, you can just turn on your computer speakers and invite the wildlife into your home. Dorset Wildlife Trust is releasing monthly podcasts that feature walks and animal sightings around some of their most popular ‘Jewel in the Crown’ sites. Not only can you learn about local wildlife from wardens and conservation officers on the spot, but the podcasts even include birdsong and sounds from the reserves to really give you the atmosphere of being right there with the staff.

Why are the podcasts good to listen to?

Dorset Wildlife Trust Conservation Assistant, Kerry Staddon, producer of the podcasts, said: “It’s a fantastic way to get a taste of what Dorset has to offer without leaving your home, which means everybody can enjoy our wildlife, including people who can’t get out and about for whatever reason. It is also beneficial if you don’t live in Dorset but have always wanted to visit, as we have listeners from all over the world! The first two releases have been really popular and have encouraged lots of people to get involved on Facebook and Twitter too.” 

Dorset Wildlife Trust has so far guided us around the Upton Heath and Brownsea Island nature reserves, with the rest of their 10 Jewel in the Crown reserves to follow in monthly releases.

How can I listen to and follow the podcasts?

Kerry adds: “You can follow and subscribe to all of the podcasts on our podcast channel http://dorsetwildlifetrust.podbean.com/ and you can also leave a comment and a rating to tell us what you think. It’s a way of making our nature reserves accessible to even more people. All you need is a computer with sound, no need to have an ipod!”
