Purbeck Important Ponds Project

Toad WildStockOur ponds are in decline

Ponds can be extremely diverse habitats containing even more invertebrates than rivers. One third of countryside ponds have disappeared since the 1940s and 80% of lowland ponds are now in poor or very poor condition.

  • In 2007 ponds were finally recognised as a UK Priority Habitat.

Purbeck Ponds Hello!

Purbeck district is known to contain many ponds of high wildlife value, and a great opportunity exists for rebuilding biodiversity in the area by creating a network of new ponds within priority areas and/or restoring existing ponds.  This 2 year programme of the Purbeck Important Ponds Project has been developed to address targets in the draft Pond Habitat Action Plan by:

  • Compiling an Inventory of all Purbeck's ponds and a shortlist of top 'Flagship' ponds
  • Surveying 30 of the best ponds for macroinvertebrates and plants
  • Creating and/or restoring 40 ponds

  • FUNDING - Some money will be available to assist in pond creation in key areas
  • LOCAL KNOWLEDGE PACK - Click here for a local toolkit, including list of local contractors, planning and Environment Agency contacts
  • VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES - Get involved in practical survey and creation work
  • TALKS - To local people about the value of ponds in Purbeck and how to enhance them
  • GET YOUR POND ON THE MAP - All countryside ponds in Purbeck need to go on the map, especially those that you regard as high in wildlife value

This project is focussed on ponds in the countryside, but wildlife ponds in garden ponds are important too.  DWT runs a Wildlife Friendly Garden Award. For more information on garden, community and wider countryside ponds see www.pondconservation.org.uk
