Tadnoll & Winfrith Reserves

Size: 44.5 & 103ha.

Unchanged for centuries and still managed using traditional techniques.   The dry heath, a carpet of purple in late summer, and wet boggy areas with acid peaty pools are home to many wildlife species, some quite rare.

> New wetland creation project at Tadnoll

Wildlife interest:

  • Birds include hobby, nightjar, woodlark and Dartford warbler.
  • Many interesting dragon & damselflies live in the wetter areas, whilst silver-studded blue butterflies can be found on the open heaths.
  • Flowers include greater burnet & marsh cinquefoil in the meadows & bog asphodel, heath orchids & sphagnum mosses in the wet areas.

Best time to visit:

High summer, but there is likely to be something of interest at any time of the year.
