West Bexington Reserve

Size: 20ha.

Spectacular coastal views, with a stretch of the Chesil Beach.  Mostly reedbed & scrubby wet meadow, attracting a large range of migrant bird species, including the occasional rarity.

Wildlife interest:

  • Look out for Cetti's Warblers all year round, with Sedge and Reed Warblers visiting in summer and Bearded Tit, Snipe and Water Rail among the winter visitors.
  • Field voles, woodmice & dormice attract the interest of predatory species.
  • Southern marsh orchid & cuckoo flower in the grassy areas.
  • The shingle beach has sea kale & yellow-horned poppy.

Best time to visit:

Any time but spring and autumn are especially good times to visit when many migrating birds pass through including Grasshopper Warbler and even the odd rarity.

Access:

Although easily reached, walking on the shingle is never easy.  Winter storms can cause flooding, restricting access to the remainder of the reserve.

Location:

Map ref. SY 527866.  Turn off the B3157 coast road at Swyre, opposite a pub about 7 miles E. of Bridport (signposted West Bexington & The Manor Hotel).  Follow road for a mile to its end at the public car park & head W. along a footpath to the reserve entrance.
