Volunteer's Week: Volunteering at Dorset Wildlife Trust

To celebrate Volunteer's Week, Lauren Lu talks about her experience volunteering at Dorset Wildlife Trust.

Since 2022 I have volunteered with Dorset Wildlife Trust a few times during the summer and half term. The experience was absolutely amazing and unforgettable. I got the chance to meet people that come from all different backgrounds that share the same passion of protecting our environment.

My first volunteering activity was based at Happy Bottom nature reserve. The weather was brilliant. We were tasked with pulling ragworts out, preparing for hay making in the area. People were very friendly and I felt very comfortable being there. At breaktime we were provided with free cookies, milk and tea. Chatting with those people was such a pleasant experience.

Whilst clearing the ragwort I was thrilled to find a four-spotted orbweb spider. I really enjoyed observing the small spider up close as we delicately handled it before releasing it back into a safe patch.

For my next volunteering activity I was setting up boxes for hazel dormice around Corfe Castle. I was told the number of hazel dormice have been in decline in recent years, which is quite worrying. Hopefully by placing these boxes, they will have a safe place to sleep during winter time.

By volunteering for Dorset Wildlife Trust, I was able to connect with nature and develop a stronger bond with the natural world, all whilst meeting new, like-minded people. It was also a great form of exercise! I think it’s really good for young people to be involved in such activities and I’m looking forward to getting more involved after my A-level exams.
