Roles are varied and include volunteering both inside and outside the visitor centres, engaging with visitors, assisting with events and conducting surveys with the opportunity to get involved with other activities such as practical conservation tasks.
Centre Officer, Sarah Hodgson said “All our visitor centres are situated in unique spots across the county, from coastal areas to rural countryside. They act as a gateway for visitors to explore diverse habitats, discover amazing wildlife and hopefully inspire people to act for nature. All that is required to be a volunteer is a passion for the natural environment and the desire to make a difference for wildlife in Dorset. No previous experience is needed as we will provide regular training sessions to develop your skills and knowledge.
Wild Chesil Centre Engagement Volunteer, Dave said “I volunteer at the Wild Chesil Centre for a number of reasons: to help keep the centre running smoothly; to expand my knowledge of the local wildlife and the work of Dorset Wildlife Trust; to meet and have interesting conversations with visitors to the centre.”
When asked about her volunteer experience at Kingcombe and what motivates her, Janet said “Making new friends with like-minded people, the enjoyment of working in a team and all the benefits of working in nature and knowing you're making a valuable contribution, however small whilst widening one's knowledge of wildlife.”
Dorset Wildlife Trust will be holding Open Days at each of the visitor centres in February and March with the opportunity to meet staff and current volunteers to find out more about the roles. Anyone interested aged 18+ should contact the relevant visitor centre to register their interest.
