A Tribute to Tony Bates

A Tribute to Tony Bates

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the death of Tony Bates, who passed away on Monday 8 September.

Tony first became involved with Dorset Wildlife Trust in the early 1980s and went on to dedicate his life to nature conservation and to the Trust. Over the years, he served with distinction as a Trustee, Chair of Council for ten years, and later as our President. His contribution was immense and enduring.

Tony was not only a leader but also someone who loved to take part in every aspect of the Trust’s work. He volunteered tirelessly, surveying and monitoring wildlife, helping with site management (particularly at Higher Hyde Heath), and supporting our Living Churchyards project. His enthusiasm for plants and habitats made him an excellent botanist, and over recent years took great joy in seeing the transformation of Wild Woodbury’s flora and fauna and leading the management of the wildlife garden at Kingcombe.

A keen photographer, Tony generously provided images for many Trust publications over the years. He attended as many events as possible, always ready to lend his support and encouragement to staff, volunteers, and fellow members.

Although very unwell at Christmas, Tony’s determination never faltered, he was still working on a book about the historical ecology of Bere Regis and the surrounding area. This commitment summed up his lifelong passion for Dorset’s wildlife and landscapes.

As well as being a passionate and very knowledgeable naturalist, Tony was a truly lovely man who took enormous pleasure from Dorset’s wildlife and working with his fellow conservationists. He was deeply loved throughout the Dorset Wildlife Trust family and beyond, and will be greatly missed not only for his knowledge and dedication but also for his warmth, kindness, and friendship.

Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time, especially his brother Roger, also a volunteer with Dorset Wildlife Trust who helped Tony to remain involved right up until his last moments.

Tony lived his life to the full. We are grateful for all that he gave to Dorset Wildlife Trust and to the cause of nature conservation. His legacy will live on in the landscapes, wildlife, and people he inspired.
