Update on Kestrels and Barn Owls
To all our wildlife fans who have been asking about the kestrel with the deformed wing and the rescued barn owls, we have an update.
With regards to the barn owls:
Thank you for all your good wishes towards the owlets and the kestrels and for your support through our barn owl Crowdfunder appeal.
Some money raised from this has gone to helping the owlets on their reintroduction journey, so thank you for your donations and your continued support of Dorset Wildlife Trust. ~The DWT Team

PLEASE READ THIS MESSAGE ABOUT THE BARN OWL NEST AT LORTON MEADOWS CONSERVATION CENTRE
Thursday 31 May 2018 - After discussions with birds of prey specialists, and due to the death of the female and likely desertion by the male barn owl, we have made a decision to intervene. The chicks will be removed from the nest this afternoon and will go to an external expert with extensive experience in rearing barn owl chicks. Without an external expert we would not be doing this. Our hope is to release any surviving chicks back onto the reserve when and if they are able to fend for themselves.
Update - At 2.30pm Thursday 31 May - the three owlets were transferred to a basket and brought down from their nestbox to our Conservation Centre. The two larger owlets were in good condition and had obviously been feeding on the prey left in the box, the smaller one was a bit dirty and hungry. However, he (we’re saying ‘he’ but we don’t know the sex of any of the owlets yet) was offered food straightaway and took it willingly – which was a great sign. Our external bird of prey expert then took them away, and they will be fed and looked after (with as little contact with humans as possible) until they can hopefully be brought back to Lorton Meadows to fledge.
Please look out for further updates on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/dorsetwildlife/

2017 was a hugely successful year for our Barn Owls. They had five chicks fly the nest, and we are hoping for more success this year.
