Marvellous moths

Assistant Warden for North and West Dorset, James Cartwright shares the findings of a moth trap at Bracketts Coppice near Yeovil.

Down in the depths of West Dorset lies the brilliant Bracketts Coppice, a mixture of woodland, meadows and pasture. Our most successful moth trap of the year to date contained 132 individual moths of 21 species - a fantastic haul which included numerous new species that we hadn’t come across before. The evident abundance of moths reassured us that there was plenty of food to be had for the rare bats that call Bracketts home.
