About the event
Designed for beginners and novices, this workshop offers an introduction to the fascinating world of bats and their ecology. Guided by a bat expert with extensive knowledge of the species at Kingcombe and across Dorset, you’ll discover the secrets of these incredible nocturnal creatures.
This evening course covers the essentials of bat ecology, including anatomy, flight, life cycle, and echolocation. We’ll explore these topics in the context of the UK’s 18 bat species, their habitat preferences, and ongoing conservation efforts.
Your tutor, Nick, has been researching bats in Dorset and beyond for over 25 years. As a member of the Dorset Bat Group, he leads numerous activities, projects, and surveys to enhance understanding of these remarkable animals. He also runs training courses, including co-tutoring the Bat Conservation Trust’s Advanced Bat Survey Techniques course.
Kingcombe Meadows, surrounding Kingcombe Visitor Centre, boasts diverse habitats and species and was designated a National Nature Reserve in 2021, making it the perfect setting for your bat-spotting adventure.
