Farming & wildlife walk on the South Dorset Ridgeway
Saturday 28 July 2018 10:30 - 13:00
Waddon Farm, near Portesham is a characterful and diverse holding in the shadow of Hardy’s Monument on the South Dorset Ridgeway. The area known as ‘Bench’ on the farm is also very atmospheric with evocative echoes of (the other!) Hardy’s Wessex. Accompanied by enthusiastic and knowledgeable Stockman Adam Fooks, we will walk over species-rich chalk grassland, between extensive stone-walls on the downland, and up onto a large patch of unusual acid grassland and heath perched atop the chalk ridge.
The latter swath of habitat is the site of a major restoration project under Countryside Stewardship for the benefit of rare flora and associated wildlife. Please feel free to bring a picnic and stay to enjoy your lunch with a remarkably beautiful view southwards to the coast and Portland. For further info and booking, please call Nick Gray on 07824 438974.
Meet at Waddon House, SY620857, (near) DT3 4ER at 10.30. Please wear sturdy footwear and suitable outdoor clothing; the walk will involve steep slopes and stiles, etc. No dogs please. Booking essential: please call Nick Gray on 07824 438974. This is a free event though donations will be very welcome. Please feel free to bring a picnic to enjoy at the end of the walk.
