The project’s bold approach will place local people at the centre of nature recovery in their community's conservation efforts, recognising that the wellbeing of people and nature are inextricably linked and all of us have a part to play. Development funding of £142,176 has been awarded by the Heritage Fund to help Dorset Wildlife Trust progress their plans to apply for a full National Lottery grant of £970,822 at a later date.
Dorset is well known for its natural beauty: internationally important downlands, wetlands and coastal sites that are havens for rare species. But most of this heritage is concentrated in the east, west and south. While it is rightly celebrated and a focal point for conservation action, the northmost part of the county is also in urgent need of nature restoration. With less natural habitat available in the wider landscape, biodiversity has taken refuge in the market towns and villages. This affords residents a huge opportunity to make a genuine difference through small but significant nature-positive action.
Through hands-on support, training and community-led grants, this project will support communities across the north of Dorset to take the lead in efforts that see local wildlife flourishing again. The benefits will not only be environmental (contributing to a nature-rich future for the north of Dorset) but social too; it will work with all sectors of the community and strengthen local people’s ties to their natural environment, fostering a healthier wellbeing amongst communities.
