How are Barn Owls protected?
Barn owls are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act which makes it an offence to kill, injure or take a wild barn owl and take or destroy their eggs. It is also illegal to disturb or check a nest site during the breeding months of April to October.
A licence needs to be obtained to study or disturb a nest during these months or to photograph them at the nest.
How can I encourage barn owls to nest?
If you would like to encourage barn owls to nest in your barn or outbuilding you could install a barn owl box.
Boxes provide essential roosting places as well as nesting sites. The best places are quiet, undisturbed buildings away from busy roads.
For more information on bird boxes take a look at the RSPB website and the Hawk and Owl Trust website.
