Hibbitt Woods Nature Reserve
Tucked away in a peaceful part of west Dorset, two attractive areas of ancient woodland together with a small flower-rich meadow, next to the small hamlet of Adam’s Green.
The woods and meadow were donated to the Dorset Wildlife Trust in 2008. Wildlife interest is extensive with birds, bats, butterflies and wildflowers especially impressive. Bullfinch, spotted flycatcher, and song thrush are among the many breeding birds. Several species of bat including brown long-eared and pipistrelle are present and there is a natterer's bat maternity roost. Silver-washed fritillaries can be seen in July swooping around the edges of the wood and the paths, as well as meadow brown, marbled white and ringlet in the meadow. Flower interest in the woods includes early purple and bird's-nest orchid, Goldilocks buttercup, wild daffodil and bluebell, and out on the meadow, common spotted orchid, cowslips and the rare adder's tongue fern.
Adam’s Green, near Halstock, is 7 miles south of Yeovil. From Yeovil take the A37 south; turn off onto a B road passing to the west of Sutton Bingham Reservoir. At Halstock turn left to Adam’s Green (signposted for Closworth), 1/2 mile to the east. Very limited roadside parking at the end of the village, next to the meadow.
Access and safety
The woodland on the south side of the road (South Clarkham Copse) is accessed via a gate through the meadow, leading to a path which loops around the wood. The northern part of the wood (Harper's Hill Copse) is also accessed through a gate but has no formal paths. Uneven gently sloping ground, which can be very wet in winter months. Be mindful of the small risk of falling branches if visiting after strong winds.
