Wildlife survey, practical conservation, fine food and great company on this five-day holiday with partners, Wild Days Conservation.
This conservation holiday, based around the Kingcombe Meadows nature reserve and the surrounding countryside, blends valuable hands-on wildlife conservation research and practical work, with an opportunity to get to know this beautiful part of rural west Dorset better – from the wildlife and landscapes to its food and characters.
You’ll feel you have reached the heart of hidden, rural Dorset on this four-night short break. You’ll stay in the Kingcombe Centre’s comfortable accommodation amid 180 ha of ancient wildflower meadows and woodlands, and contribute to small mammal research and conservation in the area.
Participants will sample the best of Dorset food, from local restaurants to the Kingcombe Centre’s marvellous in-house chef. You will learn about small mammal behaviour and how to place devices that humanely catch the animals so that we can make notes about each one before releasing it back into the wild – contributing to the national picture of small mammal populations. You will learn how to handle animals carefully and safely before letting them go and you will be taught surveying methods. We’ll put up camera traps and check the rivers for signs of otters and water voles, as well as surveying bats in the evening and seeing what moths we have caught in our trap in the mornings.
